Hecla Mining is a silver and other precious metals mining company based in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. Founded in 1891, Hecla Mining was prominent in what became known as the Silver Valley, which had the second-largest deposits of silver in the country. In 1983 this area was designated as a Superfund site by the Environmental Protection Agency, because of land, water and air contamination resulting from a century of mostly unregulated mining. Hecla Greens Creek is one of the world’s largest silver mines and the only mine allowed to operate inside a federally-protected national monument. The Hecla Silver Mines is a underground mining operation. Initial production took place in 1873 and overall output was considered to be small size. The ore mined is composed of chalcocite, argentite and sphalerite with waste material consisting primarily of calcite and pyrite. The Hecla Silver Mine is in Butte-Silver Bow, Montana. Historically the site has been associated with the Butte Mining District which is now part of the Deerlodge National Forest. The Hecla Silver Mine was closed at the time of data entry with no known plans to re-open. The deep underground silver, lead, and zinc mine, located in the Coeur d’Alene Mining District of northern Idaho, has been in operations since 1942. Hecla reported at the end of 2018 that the Founded in 1891, Hecla Mining (NYSE:HL) is the oldest operating precious metals producer in the United States and the largest domestic producer of silver.
